    Code Statistics

    BROWSER-COMPATIBILITY.md:   1,008 lines,  68 KB
    features.mjs:                 490 lines,  12 KB

    Key Decisions

    1. Feature Detection Over Browser Sniffing

    • Use capability detection (feature presence)
    • Only use browser detection for version warnings
    • More future-proof and reliable

    2. Progressive Enhancement Strategy

    • Core features required for basic functionality
    • Optional features enhance but don't break
    • Graceful degradation for unsupported features

    3. Three Polyfill Strategies

    • Selective (Recommended): Load only what's needed
    • CDN-based (Polyfill.io): Automatic per-browser
    • Bundled: Maximum compatibility, larger payload

    4. Mobile-First Considerations

    • iOS Safari OPFS limitation documented
    • Android Chrome full support highlighted
    • Touch-friendly compatibility checker UI

    Testing

    Manual Testing Performed

    ✅ Feature detection utility tested on:

    • Chrome 120 (macOS)
    • Firefox 119 (macOS)
    • Safari 17 (macOS)
    ✅ Compatibility checker UI tested:
    • Desktop (Chrome, Firefox)
    • Mobile viewport (responsive)
    • Print preview (formatted)

    Automated Testing Needed

    ⏳ Cross-browser testing with Playwright ⏳ Feature detection unit tests ⏳ Polyfill loading integration tests

    Usage Examples

    Basic Usage

    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html>
    <head>
      <meta charset="utf-8">

      <!-- Feature detection -->
      <script type="module">
        import { Features } from './core/utils/features.mjs';

        if (!Features.hasCoreFeatuers()) {
          document.body.innerHTML = `
            <div class="upgrade-notice">
              <h1>Browser Update Required</h1>
              <p>Please upgrade to Chrome 90+, Firefox 88+, Safari 14+, or Edge 90+</p>
            </div>
          `;
          throw new Error('Browser not supported');
        }
      </script>

      <!-- Load LARC -->
      <script type="module" src="./core/pan.mjs"></script>
    </head>
    <body>
      <pan-bus></pan-bus>
      <!-- Your app here -->
    </body>
    </html>

    With Selective Polyfills

    <script>
      // Check and load polyfills
      if (typeof BroadcastChannel === 'undefined') {
        document.write('<script src="https://unpkg.com/broadcast-channel@4.20.2/dist/bundle.js"><\/script>');
      }

      if (typeof ResizeObserver === 'undefined') {
        document.write('<script src="https://unpkg.com/resize-observer-polyfill@1.5.1/dist/ResizeObserver.js"><\/script>');
      }
    </script>

    Component-Specific Checks

    import { Features } from '@larcjs/core/utils/features';

    class PanFiles extends HTMLElement {
      connectedCallback() {
        const support = Features.checkComponent('pan-files');

        if (!support.supported) {
          console.warn('OPFS not available:', support.missing);
          console.info('Fallback:', support.fallback);
          this.useIndexedDBFallback();
        } else {
          this.useOPFS();
        }
      }
    }
